Crested Butte Colorado Lodging Guide |
Crested Butte was as built as a mining town in the 19th century but has turned into one of the most remote skiing destinations in the country. It is a small town with 1500 residents with the main town called Crested Butte sitting at 8900 feet and the other part called Mount Crested Butte sitting at 9350. Mt. Crested Butte sits at the base of Crested Butte Mountain Resort. The first Crested Butte ski area had the first chairlift in the state. In the 1930s, local volunteers called the Gunnison County Ski Club built the area's first ski area, the Gunnison-Pioneer Winter Sports Area. Obviously they needed some way to get to the top of the hill, so they built the first chairlift in Colorado. They finished it 1939 after spending $50 on parts. The ski lift only had one seat called the Comet Chair and it took its one passenger 2000 feet up to a hut above Paradise Divide that still exists today. Just on the other side of the mountains from Aspen, it has just as spectacular of terrain, but without the crowds and the hype. Sitting in a high mountain valley, the summer and winter activities are endless. Obviously, skiing reigns supreme in this small mountain town, but there are plenty of other activities in the winter summer. You can snowmobile, snowshoe, Nordic ski, or go shopping in the cold months. Or in the summer you can mountain bike on some of the best single track in the state. You can also go white water rafting on the Taylor River, go to the Wild Flower Festival, go fishing, hiking, climbing, or have a wedding! Because of its beauty and remoteness, Crested Butte is quickly turning into a very popular place to have a gorgeous outdoor wedding. |
