Whitefish Montana Lodging Guide |
Whitefish, population 7,000, is truly the "last best place". Its a small town atmosphere with big spirit and enduring local pride. Whitefish is an island of culture in an ocean of mountain recreation, sitting on the shores of pristine Whitefish Lake and at the southern toe of the Whitefish Mountain Range. The rolling farmlands of Flathead Valley, framed by mountain ranges on all sides, give way to Whitefish's quaint tree lined streets with personable homes and an "old west style" downtown area complete with facade storefronts.
Built in the late 1800's, the townsite of Whitefish was so heavily forested that it took over 6 years to clear the trees from the site; stumps littered the dirt roadways for so long afterwards that Whitefish was hence nicknamed 'Stumptown'. Whitefish offers year-round sporting activities, an active artist community whose work can be viewed in the many galleries of the downtown area, and a multitude of restaurants with delicious and well thought out cuisine.
Anytime of the year there are a multitude of sporting events, cultural festivals and concerts to attend. In summer the outdoors is alive with events such as the "Lake-to-Lake Canoe Race" down the Whitefish and Flathead Rivers, and the Olympic-style "Summer Games" with sports ranging from rugby to mountain biking. Winter celebrations include the "Christmas Stroll" with carol singing, and the "Torchlight Parade" on the Big Mountain. |
